November didn’t waste any time this year. Snow showed up early, and once that happens around here, people start looking for a warm place to go that isn’t just home or work. That’s been good for us.
Most nights have been steady. After-work crowds, college kids back for the weekend, familiar faces finding their usual tables. The place feels lived-in now, and that’s something I’m proud of. We built Black River to be a spot where anyone can walk in, feel comfortable, and enjoy a good game — and that’s exactly what’s been happening.
Good Games, Good Company
The tables have stayed busy, but in a good way. Plenty of laughs, plenty of competitive games, and a lot of people getting better just by playing more. That’s always been the point — whether you’ve been shooting pool for years or you’re just learning, there’s room here for everyone.
Beginner tip:
If you’re new to the game, slow down. Most missed shots come from rushing. Take an extra second to line up your cue, keep your head still, and follow through. You don’t need power to play decent pool — you need control.
A Little Football, a Lot of Opinions
Game days have added some extra energy lately. The Lions have given people plenty to talk about this season, which makes for a lively bar and no shortage of opinions. It’s been fun to watch games surrounded by people who actually care, even when we don’t all agree on what the coach should’ve done.
You don’t have to be here for football, but if you are, it’s a good crowd to watch it with.
Thanksgiving: Free Pool & Pie
Thanksgiving is coming up, and once again we’ll be offering Free Pool and Pie on Thanksgiving Day.
This isn’t about advertising or drawing a crowd. It’s just something we like to do.
If you’re out visiting family and want to stop in for a bit, great. If you don’t have much planned and want a place to relax for a while, you’re welcome here. Pool will be free, pie will be on us, and the doors will be open.
No pressure, no expectations — just a comfortable place to spend part of the day.
For the More Experienced Players
For those of you who’ve been playing a long time and like to compete:
Advanced tip:
Stop thinking only about the shot you’re on. Start thinking one shot ahead. Even simple position play — leaving the cue ball on the correct side of the next ball — will win you more games than trying to make tough shots look pretty.
Small decisions add up over the course of a rack.
Looking Ahead
We’ll be posting our holiday hours soon for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. December usually brings a full house, and we’re looking forward to it.
Thanks to everyone who’s already made Black River part of their routine. We’re proud of this place, and we’re glad you’re here.
